Can researchers nominate themselves?

No, nominations can only be submitted by the heads (e.g., President, Vice Presidents) of international academic (non-profit) institutions.

Which institutions can nominate their researchers?

Non-profit academic institutions worldwide.

How many applications can each institution submit?

A maximum of two applications may be submitted per institution.

How should the documents be submitted?

The application documents may only be submitted using the electronic form established for this purpose. All documents must be combined in one application document in PDF format.

What are the selection criteria used by the award committee?

The award recognizes outstanding scientists for foundational and pioneering research that benefits society.

Can research groups also be nominated?

Yes, groups of up to three people may be nominated.

Where will the award ceremony take place?

The award ceremony will take place on Wednesday, December 3, 2025 in Zurich. The awardee must be physically present to receive the prize.

In which subject areas can applications be submitted?

Medicine (basic research), medicine (clinical/translational), chemistry and physics, depending on the year. In 2025, the prize will be awarded only for clinical/translational research in medicine.

Since when has the Gretener-Thürlemann Prize been awarded?

The prize will be awarded for the first time in 2025.

Are candidates who have not been chosen automatically considered for the following year?

No, candidates must be re-nominated each year.
