Benefits of Studying Antiquity

Studying antiquity can provide answers to burning questions of the present day. The Zurich Center for the Study of the Ancient World (ZAZH) of the University of Zurich wants to strengthen research into antiquity and communicate findings to the public through a range of measures.

Getting people excited about antiquity

Research on this influential period is in peril, with young people’s knowledge of history on the decline. High school students are increasingly required to study IT rather than Latin or Greek. Around 50 researchers at the University of Zurich decided to counter this trend by founding the Zurich Center for the Study of the Ancient World (ZAZH). The ZAZH aims to strengthen research into antiquity and communicate findings to the public through a range of measures.

The center regularly invites outstanding scholars to speak at public lectures and research seminars in Zurich, and also organizes various other events, including holiday courses for high school students. The ZAZH is active online and on social media and makes its research available to the broad public through videos, podcasts and articles.

Interdisciplinary lecture series

The ZAZH’s interdisciplinary lectures explore topics such as democracy, demagogy and populism from different perspectives and aim to increase our understanding of current political developments by looking to antiquity. The ZAZH believes studying antiquity can enhance our view of the present. The lectures are open the public and announced via the ZAZH.
